Unplugged Youth Camp 2018

During the April school holidays and just after the ANZAC day holiday, the Unplugged Youth Camp was held at Cataract Scout Camp, near Appin for three days and two nights.

The camp is targeted at young people from high school age and up to their early twenties. The purpose of the youth camp is to actively engage young people and provide challenging and thought provoking activities with the aim of teaching them resiliency, team work, and ultimately the importance of living a Christ centred life. Statistics show that the current generation of youth spend excessive time on social media, animated games and electronic devices. The theme of this camp is aptly named “Unplugged”, where participants are expected to spend three days and two nights with no access to electronic devices, i.e., smart phones and tablets. There will be a focus on activities and teaching around the word of God with guest speakers teaching from the bible.

We have had a great response from both parties who attended & assisted. Many encouraged & impacted by God & others around them. We endeavour to do this again next year, so we are preparing now to make it bigger & better. Register now to secure your place in 2019!

Youth Trip to the GAP

Life is precious

Life struggles brings many people to a place of hopelessness. The Gap, a cliff in Sydney, Australia has a reputation of a place where people have come to the end of themselves and known for multiple suicide attempts. However, in the midst of the dark clouds of hopelessness, shines a bright light of hope.

Donald Taylor "Don" Ritchie, lived between (9 June 1925 – 13 May 2012) he was an Australian who officially rescued 160 people from suicide as of 2009 over a 45-year period, although his family claims the number is closer to 500. Ritchie explained his intervention in suicide attempts saying, "You can't just sit there and watch them."

Becoming lighthouses in a dark world

The youths gathered around principles written in Luke 11:33 ministered by John Hoang, stating that "No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.

The youth were encouraged to be guides like Don Ritchie, like lighthouses leading ships to safety.

Street Outreach

More and more young people are hanging around the streets getting up to no good. You'll see drinking behind the shopping malls to others getting involved with crime.

We want to break the cycle of crime and alcohol and drug abuse by engaging them with the hope of the Jesus Christ. Many of our street workers have come from criminal backgrounds and find great favor with these young people, seeing them go from little thugs to outstanding members of the commnuity.

Mens Boot Camp 2017

The camp involves a 30km trek along the coastal track as per last year and other activities along the way. It is not a given that everyone who wants to come automatically qualifies. Each Leader is responsible for making the training program available to all the men, encouraging them and then giving them the all clear to attend. My recommendation would be if they don’t do the majority of the training program they can’t come!

Secrets to happy life

Invitation to laugh your way to a better marriage

THIS time last year Minh and Socheata Doan were on the verge of a relationship breakdown but help came from the Potters House Christian Church in Fairfield.
Like many married couples, the Doan experienced major issues in their relationship and were trialling a separation while still trying to reconcile. “We would constantly argue over money, our children and where we spent our time,” Mr Doan said. “We were living together but living separate lives,” said Mr Doan.

The Doan’s relationship is stronger than ever.

Mr Doan said he had lost hope in the relationship and couldn’t see a future with his partner. After spending more than $2000 on marriage counselling together, only to be told they were best to separate, the couple was invited by friends to attend a community event as a last-stitch effort at reconciliation.

The marriage seminar, called Laugh Your Way To A Better Marriage, was run by the Potters House Christian Church in Fairfield.

The couple said it was the antidote to their troubles.

“We received practical advice that helped us to repair our relationship and eventually in May, were got married,” Ms Doan said. “There are so many people who are struggling in their relationships and there is help for them,” she added.

“We all make bad choices, but they don’t need to last forever.”

Surviving a bullet to the head in the aftermath of Asian crime gangs. Mr Pham found himself jailed in Silverwater, Parklea, Long Bay, Windsor, Cessnock, and Goulburn correctional centres. After the pain and scars of incarceration, Mr Pham now shares his story in hope to divert young people off the path he once lived.

Men coming out of prison find it hard to gain employment. Vu Pham spent 19 years of his life behind bars, at his release entering the workforce proved impossible. Thank God for our mentors Vu was able to land a job and today is an outstanding community contributor, now himself working and mentoring young people of the track he was once on.

RN SBS interview with Tony Hoang

Bullying turned a Catholic school boy into a gang leader seeking revenge. Now Matt Quinn counters violent extremism in young men. In between he had spiritual awakenings that unmasked the boy he used to be.

A violent and alcoholic father turned a young Vietnamese Australian boy into a gang member and drug dealer. Catholicism was important but ineffectual in his life. An encounter with Christ changed him for good.

Break Free Drama - Tony Hoang Life Story

bfd.jpg

The Break free Drama is a theater production depicting of life of ex-gangster Tony Hoang growing in notorious Cabramatta in the late 1990’s.

In 2008, untrained volunteers from the Potters House Fairfield performed the first Break Free drama with an overwhelming response from the community. Over 300 people came across the three nights, with 100+ young people making decisions to change.

The Break Free Drama as been performed every year since and has been the most effective community outreach, touching hundreds of young people, many which are now volunteers in the production.

In 2011 Big Heart Big vision Inc. received a ‘Social Change through Creativity’ grant from Fairfield Council to help professional script the drama. Selected high school student from Fairfield, Cabramatta, Bossley Park High Schools interviewed Tony and a professional script was produced.

Tony’s story confronts the social impacts within communities. Reaching disengaged youths to CLAD communities, his story is a clear example of how bad choices can rapidly spiral into a living nightmare. The production shows the aftermath of domestic violence, drug experimentation and criminal behavior. It explores the depths of loss and tragedy and ends with the inspiring hopes of faith and redemption.

This heart wrenching production has positively impacted many lives in the community. Big Heart Big Vision along with The Potters House Liverpool do want to see support from the wider community and the local Council.
